Now You See Me (2013)

Directed by Louis Leterrier
Starred Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Melanie Laurent, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, ...
2013, France & United States, English with some French dialogues, 115 minute.

What happens when a group of magicians decide to pull a heist? This is the starting point of the movie. The magicians, illusionists, mentalists, Las Vegas, heist. Sounds very promising for entertainment cinema. Letterier secures the promising plot with a very intriguing cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, Melanie Laurent,  Morgan Freeman and Michael Cane. A mixture of young talents and golden experiences. Just like team of protagonists. Now You See Me might disappoint some audiences, but delivers what it promises for many. In general, the movie deserves 'very entertaining' tag 100% especially for heist movie fans. I highly recommend it!

Heat (1995)

Directed by Michael Mann
Starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, Mykelti Williamson, Wes Studi, Ted Levine, William Fichtner, Natalie Portman,  ...
1995, United States, English with some Spanish dialogues, 170 minute.

Considered as one of the best movies, as well as one of the best crime movies ever made, I haven't seen almost no heist movies listings didn't mention Heat. Often you can see this movie as number 1 in such listings, however not in mine, although I enjoyed Heat very much.

The movie has received great reactions both from moviegoers and critics. Inspired on true events, many scenes you see in the movie indeed happened, however the real heist character was a lower profile thief.

It is for sure a pleasure to watch two giant actors of our time, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, the movie offers many unforgettable moments. The first movie ever featured De Niro and Pacino acting together. The famous shootouts scenes, as well as legendary restaurant scene where Al Pacino meets Robert De Niro are only a few of them. Not only dramatically but also cinematic wise, the scene is a real treasure to savour.

A great cast with Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd and a very young Natalie Portman completes this great team, in case if anything missed :P

The movie received several nominations in different movie awards such as Saturn Awards, MTV Movie Awards, Young Star Awards, Chicago Film Critics Association Awards etc.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009)

Directed by Tony Scott
Starred Denzel Washington, John Travolta, Luis Guzman, John Turturro, Ramon Rodriguez, James Gandolfini,  ...
2009, United States & United Kingdom, English, 106 minute.

One of the last movies the director Tony Scott has filmed before he had passed away. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 is a remake of the 1974 heist movie. Packed with action, the movie mainly benefits from Washington's and Travolta's impressive actings. Not much to say, nor to remember, except for having passed good time, while it lasted. Nominated for Teen Choice Award for the category of Choice Summer Drama Movie.

Le Cercle Rouge (1970)

Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville
Starred Alain Delon, Bourvil, Gian Maria Volonte, Yves Montand, Paul Crauhcet,  ...
1970, France & Italy, French.

A European classic by Melville with great French actor Alain Delon. Another Melville's heist movie Bob La Flambeur often is compared with this one and there is a huge debate over which one is better.

Le Cercle Rouge  means 'The Red Circle', however the movie has been always released with its original French title in US and many other countries.

The movie is often listed one of the best heist from World Cinema. According to the director the movie was ralready written but had to wait to be shot becasue of then's big heist hit movie, Asphalt Jungle, and then had to wait again because of Rififi this time. If all of these movies are in your favorites list, then don't wait any longer to see Le Cercle Rouge.

The famous heist scene last full 25 minutes without a single word being spoken. Enjoy!

The Lookout (2007)

Directed by Scott Frank
Starred Joseph Gordon-Lewitt, Jeff Daniels, Matthew Goode, Isla Fisher, Bruce McGill,  ...
2007, United States, English.

This movie mainly focuses on how a member of a robbery team is got involved. This point of view, of course, is somehow different than the most of the heist movies we see. Slow in pace, the movie might loose some heist movie fans who look for action, in the beginning of the movie, but more you go, the better it gets.
I am not sure if everybody would appreicate this movie, but if you call yourself as a heist movie fan, then you might want to give a shot. Nothing big, but worths to see.

This is the first feature movie for director Scott Frank.

Public Enemies (2009)

Directed by Michael Mann
Starred Christian Bale, Johnny Depp, James Russo, Jason Clarke, Stephen Dorff, Channing Tatum, Billy Crudup, Chandler Williams, Marion Cotillard, Giovanni Ribisi, John Ortiz, Bill Camp, Stephen Graham, Stephen Lang, Matt Craven,  ...
2009, United States, English.

Here is the story of a real life bank robber's, John Dillinger's last few years' story. Dillinger is considered one of the most dangerous bank robbers in American history. At the same time, he was end of an era. After him, stealing has changed.

Not only, a very interesting milestone on bank robberies, Public Enemies is a first class real-life gangster movie with a large and classy cast. Signed by Michael Mann, the movie brings a closer look how Dillinger was hunted by Agent Pulvis in the early years of FBI. This movie is also offers another perspective and opportunist to understand Bureau's founder director, J. Edgar Hoover.

The robbery scenes are classy, a very high quality. It is very well-done movie from costumes to actings. The sound wasn't so great though. The pace is somehow dull but the movie overall gets much better after the first watch.
If you watch it on DVD, make sure not to miss special features.
Nominated for several awards, but most notably for SAGA.

Man on a Ledge (2012)

Directed by Asger Leth
Starred Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, William Sadler, Anthony Mackie, Genesis Rodriguez, Edward Burns, Ed Harris ...
2012, United States, English.

'We have a man on a ledge'. He is about to throw himself from a Manhattan hotel rooftop. How can this story be linked to one of the biggest diamond heist is about to be pulled in the same hours somewhere else? Well, watch and discover for yourself.

A very new heist movie, pure adrenaline, with a modest but good cast. Yes, maybe it doesn't offer someting new. At least not much. But it will capture your attention from start to the end. It won't dissapoint you.

Although the movie is brand new, it has already won a nomination: Genesis Rodriguez, breathtakingly beautiful Latina, was nominated for Favorite Movie Actress in a Supporting Role in ALMA Awards.

Inception (2010)

Directed by Christopher Nolan
Starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Lewitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, Tom Berenger, Cillian Murphy, Dileep Rao, Marion Cotillard, Pete Poslethwaite, Michael Caine, Lukas Haas...
2010, United States & United Kingdom, English

I guess nobody would qualify this movie as a heist movie at first glance. The movie is so cool, different and original that you hardly can categorize it. But when you think on it, it is a pure and great robbery movie. If not, it is an inception movie :) A team work, well-organized theft (inception), so what else you need to qualify as robbery movie. Because they try to steal 'ideas'?

The movie is a little bit confusing at the opening. Then we start to understand. Editing, cinematography and scenario are first class. A truly memorable movie. If not for robbery movie, as a cinema fan, you must have it for your collection.

The movie won 4 Oscars. Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. Yes, a robbery movie with visual effects. Nominated for Oscars for another 4 category, including Best Picture and Screenplay. It was nominated for Best Science-Fiction Film in Saturn Awards, also known as Sci-Fi Oscars. Won 4 BAFTA Awards, and nominated for 6 other categories. 4 Golden Globes nominations. And many more wins and nominations in other festivals or awards. Plus a 'cult' status almost right after it was released. Best part of it, the discussions over the movie's story. Everybody has a different opinion about what the movie is about. A very deep subtext, especially a kind that audience who loves psychological analysis.

If you look for;

a puzzle-like robbery
a serious robbery movie
