I found your article on IMDB and I'm very impressed with your outline of different types of heist movies and the breakdown of each one. It's been very helpful to my own research into what makes a heist movie a heist movie.
ReplyDeleteI have so many questions, such as: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is absolutely a run of the mill Heist Movie, it has a planning stage, theft stage and brief aftermath stage. So why is it on this list and not the first?
Dog Day Afternoon also seems like a traditional heist movie, but I haven't seen it, so I digress.
But my biggest question of all centers around why The Social Network made it onto this list. Though an idea is "stolen" I suppose, none of the characters even remotely fit into any heist archetypes, and it shares no similar scenes or tropes. There is no assembly of a team in any meaningful way, nor is there a reversal of expectations or a planning session that may or may not be a montage. The crux of the film is a betrayal, but one betrayal does not a heist movie make. This singular addition has left me reeling, I really would like to know the thought process behind it.
